When robotics enters the classroom

Educational robotics is able to put the student at the center of the teaching-learning process.

The teachers of the Santa Maria Institute of Sant'Agata Li Battiati, Catania have engaged in active discussion to introduce a technological vision into the educational framework, focusing on the fundamental aspects of training and education in light of significant and continuous social change.

At the center of the teaching/learning process, the person is placed as a unique being in many aspects: affective, emotional, social, physical, cognitive, ethical, and religious.

The Institute, which as the main educational agency has always promoted the integral education of the individual, recognizes in society the need to strengthen this by introducing pathways where educational robotics is present in its teaching activities as it is motivating, innovative, and engaging. When well integrated and aligned with transversal and interdisciplinary pathways and projects, it becomes an excellent tool for learning and inclusion.

In this perspective, educational and didactic planning must be understood as:

a qualifying moment of school activity and teacher professionalism

a privileged tool for the continuous monitoring of educational processes

❖ methods of comparison between different experiences and sharing of educational responsibility

constant search for adequate responses to the educational needs of each student

continuous identification and implementation of personalized methodological pathways.

Why educational robotics is able to put the student at the center of the teaching-learning process:

Promotes the individualization of teaching in an inclusive process, in which a digital tool or a robot is used indiscriminately by all students in the class and inclusion becomes automatic.

Develops computational thinking and promotes the new role of the teacher who coordinates, guides, supports, and encourages the student.

Encourages teamwork and dynamics of mutual learning, even between different classrooms, when the activation of vertical continuity projects leads to sharing, planning, and activities where the presence of technology brings young people closer together. The robot becomes something to take care of, which generates attention, surprise, curiosity, and inquisitiveness.
